SC Type Plastic Fiber Optic Patch Cords

SC type plastic fiber optic patch cords are connection cables with SC (Subscriber Connector) rectangular connectors at both ends and plastic fiber optic cable (POF, mainly PMMA material) as the core of transmission in the middle. They are mainly characterized by easy operation and suitability for short-distance transmission, and are commonly used in industrial control, equipment interconnection and other scenarios.

1. Plastic fiber optic core: The core is mostly high-purity PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) fiber, and the cladding commonly uses low-refractive-index fluoride materials to ensure total internal reflection transmission of optical signals. The standard core diameter is usually 1.0mm, and the outer diameter is mostly 2.2mm, which is larger than that of quartz fiber, resulting in higher coupling tolerance and reduced connection difficulty.

2. SC connector: The shell is rectangular, mostly made of engineering plastic, which is heat-resistant and not easily oxidized. It is equipped with a 2.5mm ceramic ferrule to ensure the connection accuracy of the plastic fiber and reduce optical signal loss. It adopts a pluggable snap-fit ​​design, eliminating the need for rotation, making plugging and unplugging convenient, and also securely locking the interface to prevent accidental dislodgement. Both simplex and duplex versions are available to adapt to different transmission requirements.

3. Outer sheath: Commonly made of PE, PVC, or LSZH (low smoke halogen-free) materials. Custom sheaths can be selected for some scenarios. Its main function is to protect the internal optical fiber from physical wear and moisture corrosion. LSZH material is also suitable for enclosed scenarios with environmental protection and flame retardant requirements, improving safety.

Excellent operability and adaptability: The plug-in design of the SC connector requires no specialized tools, allowing even non-professionals to quickly connect devices. It is also highly versatile, compatible with various optical modules, sensors, switches, and other devices with SC interfaces.

Suitable for special environments: With no metal parts and a dielectric, non-magnetic structure, it is immune to electromagnetic interference, making it suitable for use in high-electromagnetic environments such as power rooms and industrial control systems. Furthermore, the plastic optical fiber itself is flexible, adaptable to complex wiring paths, and has a small bending radius, reducing the risk of fiber breakage due to bending.

High cost and safety: The raw material cost of PMMA plastic optical fiber is lower than that of quartz optical fiber. The SC connector has a simple structure, resulting in lower overall manufacturing costs. When paired with an LSZH sheath, it produces low smoke and low toxicity after combustion, reducing hazards in accidental scenarios such as fires.

Industrial Applications: Suitable for interface connections in industrial laser equipment, internal wiring in robots, and interconnection of equipment within electrical cabinets. It can withstand minor vibrations during equipment operation and its electromagnetic interference resistance makes it suitable for high-voltage industrial environments.

Civilian and Commercial Applications: Can be used as a short-distance patch cord in computer rooms to connect switches, optical transceivers, and other devices; it can also be used for interconnection of smart home devices and optical interfaces for medical equipment, balancing convenience and security.

Research and Testing Applications: Due to its compatibility with various light sources and detectors, and the customizable length, sheath, and other parameters, it is frequently used for optical path connections in fiber optic sensing system construction and small-scale optical experiments.
