What Is Plastic Optical Fiber?

Plastic Optical Fiber is an optical waveguide made from transparent polymer materials, most commonly PMMA (Polymethyl Methacrylate).

A typical POF consists of:

Core (light-transmitting layer)

Cladding (reflective layer surrounding the core)

Protective jacket (optional)

The core carries the light, while the cladding helps keep the light confined inside the fiber.

 

The Principle Behind Plastic Optical Fiber

Plastic Optical Fiber works based on a phenomenon called Total Internal Reflection (TIR).

When light enters the fiber core at a suitable angle, it repeatedly reflects off the boundary between the core and the cladding.

Because the cladding has a lower refractive index than the core, the light remains trapped inside the fiber and continues traveling along its length with minimal loss.

This allows light to be transmitted efficiently from the light source to the end of the fiber.
