Plastic Optical Fibers in Plant Growth Monitoring
Diverse Applications of Plastic Optical Fibers in Plant Growth Monitoring
Plastic Optical Fibers (POFs) have shown great potential in the field of plant growth monitoring due to their unique advantages. Here are some common applications of POFs in various monitoring scenarios:

1. Soil Moisture Monitoring
POFs can be integrated into soil moisture sensors to measure changes in soil humidity by transmitting light signals of different wavelengths. This is crucial for agricultural and horticultural management, as soil moisture directly affects plant growth and water requirements. For instance, Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) based soil moisture sensors, by integrating FBG hygrometers with polymer microporous membranes, can be used for irrigation purposes. Moreover, U-Bend structured plastic optical fiber sensors as soil moisture sensors have great application potential, with high sensitivity and an R value of 97.14%.
2. Light Intensity Detection
POFs can be used to monitor the light intensity received by plants. By installing optical fiber sensors around or on the surface of plant leaves, the intensity of light can be measured, helping to optimize the growth environment, especially in greenhouse cultivation. A device for testing the visible light intensity of plastic optical fibers has been disclosed, including a testing mechanism set inside the device box, which can be used to measure light intensity.
3. Temperature Monitoring
POFs can be used in temperature sensors to monitor temperature changes in the plant growth environment, helping to regulate environmental conditions. Excessively high or low temperatures can affect normal plant growth, and optical fiber sensors can provide real-time temperature data. For example, reflection sensors based on F-P interferometers and plastic optical fiber knots are used to measure temperature and refractive index simultaneously.
4. Gas Concentration Monitoring
Optical fiber sensors can be used to detect the concentration of gases in the air around plants, such as carbon dioxide concentration, which helps understand the efficiency of plant photosynthesis. Optical fiber gas sensors use optical fibers as information transmission media and achieve high-precision measurement of gas concentration through specific optical principles.
5. Root System Monitoring
Optical fiber sensors can be used to detect the growth of plant root systems. Fibers can be buried in the soil to monitor changes in the environment around the roots (such as temperature, humidity, oxygen, etc.), providing data support for plant root growth. A device with distributed optical fiber sensors is used for fully automatic, real-time monitoring of underground root development.
6. Plant Growth Stage Monitoring
By monitoring different physiological characteristics within the plant (such as leaf water content, temperature changes, etc.), optical fiber sensors can help determine the growth stage of the plant, aiding in optimizing fertilization and irrigation strategies.
7. Disease Detection
By monitoring the reflected spectrum of the plant surface, POF sensors can detect whether the plant is affected by diseases or pests, especially as specific wavelength changes can reflect the health status of the plant.
The application of plastic optical fiber technology in plant growth monitoring not only improves the accuracy and real-time nature of monitoring but also provides more intelligent and automated solutions for modern agriculture. With continuous technological advancements, it is expected that plastic optical fibers will play an even greater role in the field of smart agriculture.
