The main parameters of plastic optical fiber

Wavelength: Common transmission wavelengths for plastic optical fiber (POF) are 650 nm (red light) and 850 nm, but some high-performance plastic optical fibers also support longer wavelengths (such as 1300 nm).

 

Attenuation: Refers to the transmission loss when an optical signal is transmitted through the fiber, usually expressed in dB/km.

 

Transmission Rate: For short distances, plastic optical fiber can support high transmission rates. Within 100 meters, plastic optical fiber can transmit data at speeds of up to 1 Gbps.

 

Core Diameter: Common core diameters for plastic optical fibers range from about 0.25 mm to 3 mm, much larger than those of glass fibers (typically 8 to 62.5 micrometers). The larger core makes plastic optical fibers easier to connect and handle.

 

Numerical Aperture (NA): The typical numerical aperture is around 0.5, meaning plastic optical fiber has a large acceptance angle, making it easy to couple light sources. Additionally, there are special fibers with a numerical aperture of 0.48 or 0.6.

 

Bend Radius: Plastic optical fibers have excellent bending performance, allowing for smaller bend radii, typically around 10 times the core diameter. They are more resistant to bending than glass fibers.

 

Temperature Range: The operating temperature range for plastic optical fibers is generally between -40°C and +85°C, but some special plastic optical fibers can withstand temperatures up to 105°C. There are also specialized outer jacket materials available for use in high-temperature environments.

 

Mechanical Strength: Plastic optical fibers have higher toughness and tensile strength compared to glass fibers and are more impact-resistant.
